Kinesio Taping & Therapeutic Taping

Return to your sport faster with pain relief, joint support and improved performance from Kinesio taping.

Have you suffered an injury or condition that’s affecting your everyday life?

Whether you’re an athlete or weekend warrior, Kinesio taping can help you get back in the game. For athletes, Kinesio taping also helps improve stability, movement efficiency and confidence during training and competition.

At Mountain Land Physical Therapy Partners, we offer Kinesio taping to help alleviate pain, promote healing, increase strength and range of motion and most importantly, get you back to living your normal life comfortably.

What is Kinesio taping?

Kinesio taping is a therapeutic taping approach designed to relieve pain, reduce inflammation and support muscles and joints so patients can move better and perform with confidence. Kinesio tape is water resistant and can be worn for up to five days, making it a convenient and accessible option.

Kinesio taping is used by healthcare professionals to treat a variety of musculoskeletal conditions and is safe for patients of all ages and levels of care.

What does Kinesio taping do?

Kinesio taping supports both pain relief and athletic performance by improving how your muscles and joints work together.

  • Resets muscle and joint communication
It corrects faulty interactions between the skin, muscles, joints and tendons, which can improve muscle strength and function.
  • Reduces pain signals
By blocking pain messages to the brain, muscles in the affected area can relax, reducing spasms.
  • Improves movement and circulation
When pain is eased, blood flow and range of motion increase, allowing for more natural movement and faster recovery.

Who is Kinesio taping for?

At Mountain Land Physical Therapy Partners, we use a variety of therapeutic taping products, including Kinesio Tape (KT Tape), RockTape, StrengthTape and SpiderTech, to treat musculoskeletal conditions. It is commonly used by athletes to stay active while recovering from injury, reduce pain during play and support joints during high demand movements.

Kinesio taping gained widespread attention when Kerry Jennings of the U.S. Women’s Sand Volleyball Team had her shoulder taped during matches at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Therapeutic taping is effective for patients of all ages and care levels, from pediatrics to geriatrics, and can help with orthopedic, neurological, oncology, acute and chronic conditions.

Developed by Dr. Kenzo Kase in the 1970s, elastic tape was designed to mimic a therapist’s hands. Today, therapeutic taping is used for pain management, soft tissue injuries, joint and tissue alignment, edema and more.

It is especially helpful for anyone experiencing:

  • Sports injuries
  • Muscle strains
  • Joint pain
  • Postsurgical recovery
  • Lymphedema
  • Postural issues

Our physical therapists use a variety of exercises and modalities in your treatment plan, tailored to your specific needs. Kinesio taping is one of these modalities and is used to reduce pain, improve mobility and support muscles and joints during daily activities and athletic movements.

During treatment, your physical therapist will:

Frequently asked questions about Kinesio taping

Should you wear therapeutic tape all day?

You can wear kinesiology tape for up to five days if necessary to protect an injury without having to take complete rest.

Can you shower with KT tape on?

Most brands of therapeutic tape are water resistant. You may shower, bathe and swim with the tape on the skin. Let the tape air dry, or pat it dry with a towel (do not use a hair dryer). Avoid sun and excessive heat on the tape.

Is there a difference between the colors of therapeutic tape?

There is no physical or chemical difference between the colors of therapeutic tape. The colors were developed to be compatible with color therapy. The beige was created for minimal visibility, and the black was created after many requests. Color choice is a matter of individual preference.
