Somatosensory Evoked Potential (SSEP) Testing
Somatosensory Evoked Potential (SSEP) testing is a specialized diagnostic study used to evaluate how well electrical signals travel through the peripheral nerves, spinal cord, and brain. This non-invasive neurological test helps identify disruptions in nerve pathways that may be contributing to pain, numbness, weakness, balance problems, or changes in sensation.
During an SSEP test, small electrical impulses are applied to specific nerves in the arms or legs while sensors placed on the skin and scalp record how quickly and effectively the signals travel through the nervous system. The test is safe, well tolerated, and does not require surgery or injections.
At Mountain Land Physical Therapy Partners, SSEP testing helps our providers gain valuable insight into nervous system function so we can better understand the source of your symptoms and create a more targeted rehabilitation and treatment plan.
Conditions Commonly Evaluated with SSEP Testing
SSEP testing may be recommended for patients experiencing:
- Numbness or tingling in the arms or legs
- Peripheral neuropathy
- Small fiber polyneuropathy
- Spinal cord injuries or compression
- Multiple sclerosis (MS)
- Cervical or lumbar spine conditions
- Balance and coordination disorders
- Nerve damage related to trauma or chronic conditions
- Weakness, altered sensation, or neurological symptoms
SSEP testing can be especially valuable when evaluating small fiber polyneuropathies, which may not always be detected through traditional EMG or nerve conduction velocity (NCV) testing. This allows providers to gather additional information when patients are experiencing neurological symptoms despite normal EMG/NCV results.
What to Expect During an SSEP Test
SSEP testing is performed in a comfortable outpatient setting and typically takes between 30 and 90 minutes depending on the areas being evaluated. Small electrodes are placed on the skin, and mild electrical stimulation is delivered to targeted nerves. Most patients describe the sensation as a light tapping or tingling feeling.
The test is safe, non-invasive, and requires little to no downtime afterward, allowing most patients to return to normal daily activities immediately following their appointment.
Why SSEP Testing Matters
SSEP testing provides important information about how signals travel through the nervous system and can help detect abnormalities that may not appear on standard imaging alone. This advanced diagnostic tool can assist providers in identifying neurological dysfunction, monitoring recovery, and guiding physical therapy treatment recommendations.
If you are experiencing persistent nerve pain, numbness, weakness, or unexplained neurological symptoms, the team at Mountain Land Physical Therapy Partners can help determine whether SSEP testing may be appropriate for you.
