As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we take a moment to recognize the incredible contributions of women who have shaped the field of physical therapy. One being Mary McMillan, a woman whose leadership and vision paved the way for modern physical therapy as we know it today.

In 1921, Mary McMillan made history when she was elected the first president of the American Women’s Physical Therapeutic Association, which later evolved into what we now know as the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). At a time when opportunities for women in healthcare were limited, McMillan broke barriers and helped establish physical therapy as a respected and essential profession.

Her passion for physical therapy, education, and professional growth set the foundation for the advancement of physical therapy, creating opportunities for generations of practitioners to follow. McMillan’s leadership and commitment to patient care helped shape the standards and practices that continue to guide physical therapists today.

As we reflect on Women’s History Month, we celebrate the legacy of Mary McMillan and countless other women who have contributed to the growth and success of the physical therapy profession. Their dedication and perseverance remind us of the importance of elevating, supporting, and recognizing women in healthcare.

Let’s continue to honor and uplift the women in physical therapy who are making a difference every day! Read more about Mary McMillan HERE!
