Common sports injuries we treat
Sprains
A sprain occurs when a ligament connecting one bone to another is stretched beyond its limits. Once a sprain occurs and a ligament is overstretched, it is more likely that it’ll occur again.
Strains or pulled muscles
A strain, also called a pulled muscle, occurs when a tendon connecting your muscle to bone is stretched beyond its limits. Once the tendon is overstretched, it is more likely to be strained again.
Knee injuries
Your knee is the most complex joint in your body and is, therefore, one of the most commonly injured body parts.
Knee injuries may include dull aches that run from your hip to your knee, repetitive use injuries making it difficult to move the knee or more severe injuries such as an ACL tear.
Shin Splints
The medical term for shin splints is medial tibial stress syndrome, referring to pain in the tibia. This pain is typically caused by stress placed on the shinbone and the connective tissues surrounding it.
Shin splints are painful and often debilitating. However, they can be avoided by wearing proper footwear, warming up before exercise and strengthening your core and leg muscles.
How sports injuries happen
The term “sports injury” is all-encompassing and includes any type of injury that occurs during an athletic activity. It can happen from lifting heavy weights at the gym, running in ill-fitting shoes, swinging a bat too aggressively, or rolling your ankle on the soccer field.
One of the most important aspects of sports injury rehabilitation is treating it as soon as possible. Your treatment plan and duration of recovery will vary depending on how severe the injury is, your health history and whether or not the injury requires surgical intervention.
How we get you back in the game
Our physical therapists are movement experts dedicated to helping you reach your physical goals. By designing a custom treatment plan based on your specific needs, we focus on getting you back to your sport as quickly and safely as possible. When an injury requires additional medical evaluation, we can coordinate with orthopedic specialists to determine if surgical intervention is appropriate.
Your path to recovery
Following a comprehensive diagnostic exam (which may include a review of X-rays, MRIs or ultrasounds), we build a sports injury physical therapy plan that considers the nature of your injury, your fitness level and your lifestyle.
Your athletic recovery will likely include:
- Manual therapy: To increase range of motion and reduce scar tissue
- Targeted stretching: To improve balance, flexibility and mobility
- Strengthening exercises: To support the injured area and reinforce the surrounding muscles
Our approach to athletic injury treatment is designed to help you recover fully from your current injury while building the resilience needed to prevent future setbacks. When necessary, we ensure timely referrals to surgeons or specialists to optimize your overall recovery.
