Why the Idaho Medicaid Rally Matters for Physical Therapy and Patient Care

Recently, hundreds of people gathered at the State Capitol in Idaho to rally against proposed Medicaid cuts. Advocates, healthcare providers, patients, and community members came together with a shared message: Medicaid is essential, and cuts to this program would have real consequences for real people. Medicaid plays a critical role in providing access to healthcare services across Idaho, especially for individuals with disabilities, chronic conditions, low income, or complex medical needs. One of those essential services is Physical Therapy, which helps patients recover from injuries, manage pain, regain mobility, and maintain independence.

The Impact of Medicaid Cuts on Physical Therapy

Proposed reductions to Medicaid funding could significantly affect access to Physical Therapy services. For many patients, Medicaid is the only way they can receive consistent, medically necessary care. These cuts could lead to reduced access to therapy, longer wait times, fewer treatment options, delayed recovery, and decreased mobility. Physical Therapy is often a key part of preventing long-term disability and avoiding more costly medical interventions. When access to therapy is limited, the effects are felt not only by patients but also by families and the broader healthcare system.

Standing Up for Patients and Providers

We were proud that some of our physical therapists were able to attend the rally and show their support for Medicaid and the patients who rely on it. Their presence reflects what we see every day in our clinics. When patients have access to Physical Therapy, they are better able to move, work, care for themselves, and stay active in their communities. Advocacy efforts like this rally help highlight the importance of protecting healthcare access and ensuring that policy decisions reflect the real needs of patients and providers across Idaho. Discussions about Medicaid often focus on budgets and numbers, but at the heart of this issue are people. Physical therapists see firsthand how important consistent care is for recovery and long-term health. By staying informed and engaged, we hope this message is heard to Idaho lawmakers. Join with us and make a difference. Your voice matters.
